Playing the 6-6 and the 5-5 Opening Rolls

In backgammon we would find that the game would quickly transition from the opening to the mid-game in a flash. Though the opening rolls only constitute a few turns in the opening, messing up that part of the game would bring serious problems to any player. We'll discuss how to properly play a 6-6 and a 5-5 opening rolls.

First off in our discussion would be a 6 and a 6-opening roll. There is a split in opinion regarding this opening roll. The idea that tops the rest regarding this double is to make the bar points. The first bar point to be made given this opening roll is the 18 point. Next on the list would be the 7 point.

When we make the 18 point we can be sure of a good position for our back men even at the opening rolls. This gives a slight assurance that our back men won't get caught or trapped early in the game. It may not be recommended that all four turns of movement be used to escape the back checkers.

Some have argued that it is a waste of opportunity when we get a 6-6 if we devote all movement to our back men. Some say it is best to escape the back men while building your own points. A recommended point that we ought to build during the opening rolls is the 7 point. Given a 6-6 roll we get a chance to do this.

Making your 7 point in the opening rolls is a great way to set up a prime, in case a player might want to go for a priming game. But in case the opponent makes a bar point, it is wise to make your own. Given this situation it is recommended not to move the back men just yet but instead to make your 2 point.

Next in the double opening rolls is a 5-5. This gives a player a chance to hit the enemy's back men. Given that our opponent has split his back men early in the game and you get a 5-5 in the early opening rolls making this hit not only puts that checker on the bar it also builds our home board.

If our opponent is smart enough and has not moved his back men; the next best thing about this opening roll is that we can make a point on the home board at the 3 point.

The 6-6 and the 5-5 opening rolls are way beneficial to a player at the start of a match. Taking advantage of the different possibilities available given these two double rolls on the dice builds a sound game plan.
